✭✭✭✭✭ A GHOST OF A CHANCE: Imagine being part of a family with the gift to communicate with ghosts. Josie was used to seeing them, until their pleas to be heard got to be too much and she built a wall to keep them out. When her brother’s ghost breaks through and calls for help, she must go to his best friend, the one man who crushed her heart years before. Their hearts don’t stand A Ghost of a Chance against love. Great job once again, Abigail Owen! ~Tome Tender
The flash of headlights illuminating the trees signaled the arrival of another person. Most serious backpackers, and they had to be serious to tackle this trail, arrived before dark to set up camp while they still had decent light. This had to be Josie. Sure enough, her red SUV entered the small dirt clearing that served as a parking area. Bryce waited, arms crossed, as she parked, turned off the engine, then sat inside a long moment.
An unexpected flash of amusement struck. Was she deciding how to deal with him?
Due to the tinted glass of her vehicle, combined with the dark of night, he couldn’t see what she was doing. The vehicle door slammed, alerting him that she got out. She stepped around the back as she came around where he stood.
She stopped a few feet away and crossed her arms. “What are you doing here?”
Why did her question make him feel like an errant schoolboy? Her wariness bothered him. “I decided to help after all.”
“I see.” She popped open the back of her utility vehicle, swinging the spare tire out of the way before yanking the door wide to unload her gear. Well-packed camping gear appropriate for this kind of backpacking, he noted with surprised approval. Everything she would need for a trip like this.
“I didn’t know you backpacked.”
Josie shot him a glance. “I don’t.”
“Then where’d you get this stuff?”
“If you don’t backpack, how’d you know what to grab?”
Another quick glance. “Lucky, I guess.”
Why was she always so cagey? As always happened around her, he couldn’t resist the urge to push her buttons. Bryce stepped closer and put a hand over hers. She jerked away from his touch and opened her mouth. Before she could say anything, he beat her to it. “You won’t need the tent.”
She raised a single eyebrow. “Oh?”
“I have a two-man tent already set up.”
He caught her cryptic look and again got the distinct impression she waged some sort of internal debate.
His lips twitched at her grudging acceptance. Though how he could be amused baffled him. After all, he had come to help, and she acted as though his presence annoyed her. Once upon a time Josie would’ve smiled sweetly, thanked him, and acted happy to see him. He used to live for that smile. The memory so clear in his mind, the morose woman in front of him was almost painful to see instead. His heart was lead, sinking.
Why did he allow himself to be disappointed with her every time? He should be over this. Over her. She clearly was. Shrugging off his disappointment, Bryce hefted her pack. “Come on.”
